History

Our busesCoach America's existence in North Carolina is steeped in a long history of family run businesses, hard work and commitment to the passenger transportation industry. That hard work and commitment continues today as a result of the current leadership's focus on operating the business like it is still our family's business - with the strength of a corporate support network and sister companies from coast to coast.

In 1997, 1998 & 2000 America Charters, Piedmont Coach Lines & Southern Coach Company sold their family businesses to Coach USA and now those businesses are owned by CUSA, LLC d/b/a Coach America. Throughout the late 90's and early 2000's that parent ownership structure evolved from Coach USA to American Coach Lines and now Coach America.

In 2009 the structure of the companies were streamlined to create a single company. This brought the three brands in North Carolina (Southern Coach Company, American Coach Lines and America Charters, Ltd.) together as Coach America - The Carolina's largest motorcoach operator. In 2010 and 2011 we continue to build the business while retaining the best parts of the former companies and we are proud to continue with the values and the commitment of the family owned business before us.

The priorities today are the same as the were during the peak of each company as well as when each of the legacy companies began in the 1930's, 40's & 50's - Provide a great service to our customers for a fair value, provide our employees with a great place to work and support their families and maintain a safe environment in all that we do.

Piedmont Coach Lines

In 1956, Kenneth Chilton, a tobacco buyer, was presented a motorcoach. Mrs. Chilton had purchased this motorcoach, paying $ 1,000.00 cash. This was the start of what became the largest motorcoach company in North Carolina, known as Piedmont Coach Lines.

Wade, Sr., and his wife Katie Mann Wade were in the movie theater business, and with World War II underway, few people had enough gasoline to drive to the movies. Mrs. Wade saved-up money from popcorn sales to purchase the company's first bus . . . and Durham - Dunn Bus Lines was born.
